Did I mention that one of my New Year resolutions is to surround myself with more colourful bags? It doesn’t always suit my inner minimalist but colourful bags are just oh-so fun. Here’s another option to add to the long list of options: the UK brand What Daisy did.
Though they have a degree in Art (Ozric) and Fashion (Daisy), the couple behind What Daisy did started their career working at major UK music festivals. During their jobs they had to manage the festival’s waste, which reconfirmed their idea that a disposable lifestyle is really something that should be changed.
During their winterbreak, while travelling through India, they met Manish, a craftsman turning recycled leather into beautiful goods that could last a lifetime. The couple designed their own range of bags and together with Manish and his team made their designs reality.
What Daysie did saves a lot of otherwise discarded leather from ending up in a landfill. Seeing as the waste product is a relatively inexpensive material, the craftsmen can be paid a fair wage, and the consumer doesn’t have to break the bank to own a rainbow-coloured, fairly produced, real leather bag.
So far they brought 40 families employment and hopefully many more, as they are currently looking to expand into new products and overseas markets. Looks like 2015 will be a colourful year!
