The top 5 brilliantly branded handmade candles post has been incredibly popular, and I have sneaky suspicion a part 2 will be shared soon! Upwined Candles is definitely not to miss on that new list. It’s upcycled, handmade and with a head candlemaker who is also a graphic designer, it’s no surprise that the branding is mouthwatering good. Meet Upwined candles!
“I have a passion for beautiful and unique interior design. I like globes from the 50s. Furniture, lamps or cool copper mugs from small factories. Handmade stuff. But above all, I love high quality scented candles with natural ingredients.” Marco Heß, owner Upwined Candles.
Marco Heß, a graphic designer from Hamburg, Germany, quit his job in the summer of 2013. He wanted to spend less time behind the screen, and more working with his hands.
He noticed in his own neighbourhood that the restaurants ended up with a lot of empty wine bottles at the end of each night. These would get recycled, sure, but why not use them as they are, as containers for scented candles?
Cutting glass without breaking it isn’t actually an easy task. “After weeks of experimenting, I improved the technique further and further and with each cut, the bottles turned out to look better. With tiny corners and rough used look edges, just as I had imagined. I would say the 100th candle was a hit!”.
The Upwined candles are made from 100% soywax, obtained from the pure oil out of soybean plants. I think the scent descriptions have an especially nice ring to them in German, like this one for ‘Gently Rose’:
Die Duftkerze No.24 – Gently Rose verbreitet einen angenehmen, sinnlichen Duft von frischen Rosenblättern im Morgentau, gewonnen aus ätherischen Duftölen. Genau das richtige für Romantiker und alle, die Entspannung und Erholung suchen.
It’s for everyone ‘looking for relaxation and recreation’. Ehmm.. hello isn’t das ganz everybody? Especially when it’s also a ‘sensual scent’ and upcycled and made from sustainable soy wax and, leave this up to the graphic designer, looking very pretty!
From the logo, to the short video he made below and especially the packaging (pretty things come in black boxes!) this is another prime example of a brilliantly branded handmade candle. Double thumbs up!
