Late October last year, I stumbled upon the Amsterdam-based start-up Vinoos by Ams. Their product? The real wine gum.
Back then I was already pretty impressed:
The wine gums come in two flavours: a red merlot and white chardonnay. A red port and bubbles are the two flavours which will be launched next. They are free from: gluten, nuts, gelatine, fat, lactose and artificial colouring. And yes, and they are also free from alcohol. All this makes the wine gums more accessible for those with allergies, or if you don’t drink alcohol. Sadly it does take away the experiment of eating yourself drunk.
Though it might look like candy, it is a so-called ‘adult luxury food’. According to Vinoos by AMS the real wine gums are best enjoyed with cheese or with an appetizer. Or during a long flight. As the wine gums are now for sale on all KLM planes.
Last week I finally got my hands on these Chardonnay and Merlot treats. A treat it was, and -spoiler alert- can be for you too!
This Merlot is not just for show
Vinoos by AMS brands their product as a high-end luxury product, and does so very well. The packaging of the real wine gums (black for Merlot, white for Chardonnay) is very slick and shares the clear message that these should not mindlessly be munched away.
I tested the wine gums on a couple of occasions after dinner with friends and family and got a whole lof of happy faces in return. It’s a surprising gift (“You brought what, edible wine!?”) and they pare really well with an actual glass of wine. Or (pro-tip!) take a small sip of water while munching on your wine gum and it gets really close to actual having a sip of wine (yes this one’s for you preggo ladies!).
The wine gums are made with the adult, health concerned consumer in mind and are a far cry from the artificially flavoured, overly sweet ‘wine gums’ available in supermarkets.
Out of the two, the Chardonnay was my definite favourite. There is a nice freshness (must be the ‘nuance of limes on the palate’) and the aftertaste is very, well, Chardonnay-e, and gives a nice tickling sensation on your tongue.
Both the Merlot and Chardonnay do not contain alcohol, though creating real wine gums with alcohol is something the Vinoos by AMS team is working on. They are also developing new flavours which are expected to become available in spring next year.
Seeing as these the real wine gums are also very much a Dutch product (proudly made in the Netherlands!) wine gums in a new Delft Blue packaging will be available soon exclusively at de Bijenkorf. I’m pretty sure all of these things will increase their fan base even more!
Curious to try the Real Wine Gums? I thought so!
