Ping Pong tables do not have to be ugly, thanks to Tyler Hays from luxury furniture brand BDDW.
Putting designers in the spotlight that make everyday terribly practical items look stunning, because you can never have too much beauty in your life. Made Beautiful: the ping pong table.
Tyler Hays has always made things. His activities include woodworking, ceramics, bee-keeping, taking a sewing class, collecting elk blood for dying t-shirts, and “making or planning to make kit boats, leather wallets, hair-care products, denim and cutlery”. His narrative as written down by the Wall Street Journal, is seriously impressive.
As is this Ping Pong table. It’s a far cry from the mix of bright screaming colours and a dull looking net. Ever so practical for the sport itself, but never something to look at in awe.
Hays’ version is made from cherry and maple wood, and a removable leather net with cast bronze arms. The design of this ping pong table came to life together with author Jonathan Safran Foer, who walked into Hay’s shop one day and became a friend. Now they have ping pong nights every Tuesday, and discuss which other sports item they can beautify next (or so I imagine/wish for..).
