Beers left over from Saturday night’s party? Sunday morning freshly baked bread cravings? Add one can of beer to Barrett’s Ridge bread mix, let your oven do the work, and have a beer bread feast within one hour!
This brilliant idea comes from Tayrene Mugridge, or more specifically, her grandmother, who passed on the family recipe. Tayrene used to only bake the bread on the weekends, or give a batch to friends as gifts. After being fed up with her career in the modelling industry, she decided to go into the beer bread business, and set up her company Barrett’s Ridge.
The beer bread proved to be popular, fast. She sent out some packages to bloggers, and made connections through Social Media. Now the Beer Bread Kits are not only available in her native South Africa, but also in Namibia, the U.K. and Australia.
The Beer Bread Kits come in different flavours, and depending on which beer you use the taste will vary. You can try it with cider and non-alcoholic brews as well. On top of a very clever business idea, the presentation really stands out. The bags are hand-sewn, and the hand-stitched folded leaflet indicates the flavour. This is printed on locally-produced paper, made from 90% sugar cane waste. Nice one!
