After Co-Make‘s DIY shoes I stumbled upon another Good Shoe Idea, from Germany, of course. Handmade, minimal, laser-embossed footwear, anyone?
Atheist calls themselves the ‘meaningful shoe company’ and since their initial launch on Kickstarter in 2012, they continued to build their enterprise selling comfortabel handmade sneakers. For its next step Berlin-based Atheist is taking customising and individualisation to a whole new level by offering their handmade footwear with your own laser engraved soles. Or, if you want to take the more visible route, get your shoes tattooed. Tattooed shoes? Well leather is skin after all, and especially if you filled up your entire body with tats, getting shoe tattoos isn’t such a crazy idea.
“We can carve ANY IMAGE YOU LIKE into the sole, or onto the leather, of a beautifully-Bauhaus-inspired, minimalistic shoe. (…) your dog’s face, your lover’s favourite motto, Vladimir Putin riding a dolphin, a Carl Sagan quote… anything.” Atheist shoes
The atheist group isn’t all German, between the shoemaker, the designer, the copywriter, the textile expert, the accountant and the musician that run the company there are also Portugese and Brits. And the shoes are made in a workshop in Porto, Portugal. Their footwear is however designed in Berlin, very much Bauhaus inspired and, like many ideas born in Germany, ganz cool.
The atheist shoes are for sale online here, or, give your pledge in their latest Kickstarter campaign, and you can have your own design lasered into the soles. Big bonus: if you have an idea rather than a design, they’ll make it for you! Have I mentioned that this is all just too ganz cool for school?
